Commissions

Much of my work as an iconographer is done by commission.  Over the years I have created a large iconostasis for a church, large tritychs for churches, stations of the cross, shrine icons, an assortment of icons designed for personal use, and replaced damaged wall panels.  I am a fairly traditional iconographer, which means that I never stray very far from Byzantine tradition and when I do so, it is only with good reason.   Please keep in mind that every icon I create calls forth over 45 years of experience and study.

Depending on the task, I use a variety of supports from traditional wooden panels with cloth and natural gesso, lighter panels for larger jobs, canvas for wall paintings, etc.  Each icon is individually designed and executed.

I use acrylic paints and 23 carat gold leaf.  Although I am able to paint in egg tempera, this is not my preferred medium.

It is important to say that Byzantine iconography differs from Western painting in that icon painting is more structured and ruled by the canons of iconography which I adhere to faithfully.  Not every aspect of an icon is open to discussion and negotiation.  Please understand that before we begin. A covenant will be drawn up and a down payment made prior to the start of any project.  A fee will be charged for consultations and preliminary designs which will be credited to your total should you decide to proceed with me.
