Teaching someone the technique of icon painting is a simple matter, although not an easy one.  To become a good iconographer takes time, lots of time, but this is a good start.  During one of my workshops I will walk you through the basic method that all icon painters use, regardless of their medium or style.  The complexity of the image we reproduce will vary depending on the length of the workshop. We will discuss technical methods and questions, historically pertinent considerations, theological principles, and the essential role of prayer in creating icons faithful to the canons of iconography based upon my more than 45 years of study of this art.  No prior experience or artistic abilities are necessary.  The only thing required of the beginner is the ability to let go, to trust, and to follow the directions of a master iconographer who has led hundreds of people through this journey over the last 25 years.

If you're interested in sponsoring a workshop, the only essentials are good light, adequate space, and access to water. The length of the workshop is up to the host for the most part.  The minimum is 14 students, and we can discuss maximum numbers if that becomes an issue.  My fees are charged per student and I ask that the host split the travel expenses with me.  All supplies are included.  The hosts may want to add something on top of my fees to cover their own costs.  A $500 fee is required to schedule a workshop, which is refundable up to 90 days prior to the workshop date.

I recommend that students purchase and read my book, "A Brush with God: An Icon Workbook" prior to our class, but this is not required.  My second book, "Another Brush with God: Further Conversations about Icons" is a good resource for students who wish to go deeper into this study.
